Trombone Mythbuster – demolish trombones on Beyond Tomorrow

trombones tenor trombone
Can you play a trombone in tenor/alto clef?!?!?

I have this audition piece and the clef looks like a backwards “S”. I’m guessing this is Tenor or Alto clef. But, tenor trombone plays bass clef and I have never learned tenor/alto clef! WHAT DO I DO?! BLEH.

Well, if you can’t read all the clefs that a trombonist is supposed to read, I guess you FAIL THE AUDITION. Easy, huh?
What you’re seeing is alto (if the indent indicating middle c is the middle line) or tenor (if on the 4th line). That’s all trombonists need to know unless they get into historical performance, in which case they’ll have both forms of baritone clef, sub-bass clef and maybe mezzo-soprano.
What do you do? Buy a copy of the Blazhevich clef studies and start practicing.
