Trombone Question- Why do I sound worse on my King 3b trombone?
I’ve been playing trombone for several years now. i sound quite good on my school student trombones. i recently purchased a beautiful King 3b, it was completely refurbished, my teacher personally checked it out and said everything was perfect.
when i play my new King, however, i don’t sound as good as on the cheaper student horns. i sound much more airy, and my notes aren’t as clear. i made sure the trombone wasn’t leaking, and everything is fine with the spit valve cork.
do you know why this is? my only guess is because at school i usually play a larger bore trombone, a Conn (can’t remember what specific model). since the 3b has a smaller bore, does this mean i need to adjust my buzzing style slightly?
i have a Bach 6 1/2 al mouthpiece, just for clarification. i wear braces, but since i sound normal on my school trombone, i don’t see how this would be an issue.
thanks
It is possible that you are adjusting to the new bore size. Different sizes will require more or less air. Larger bore instruments require more air and you’re probably using the same amount of air in the King as you did with the Conn. Also, because it is a new instrument, you are probably not used to it. Different horns can have a huge difference in how they play. Some horns can have more or less air resistance or have different tuning positions than what you’ve played for most of your time.
You shouldn’t need to adjust anything with your buzzing (unless there was something wrong to begin with). All horns have their characteristic, you’ll get used to it overtime. You’ll learn more about the instrument as time passes.
