Help on writing a composition on transposing instruments?

I am working on a composition based on a melody given to me. The piece is supposed to be a four part chorale, and I am writing it for a trombone, french horn, tenor sax, and Bb clarinet. I put the melody in the clarinet. Now if I want to create chords, do I figure out the chord I want and then transpose each element the the instrument playing it? I am leaning towards this, but I want to be 100% sure before I spend hours on it.

I am telling you this to help you LEARN, not to somehow let you cheat. If you do not know the correct way to transpose for each instrument, then if you use Sibelius or Finale, you can write a score all in concert pitch. You then can uncheck that option, and since you have NAMED the instruments in the score, the program you use will automatically transpose them correctly. You will then see how this works. It will also warn you if you have exceeded the appropriate playing ranges.

There is not substitute for knowing how to do this yourself – but most of us still think *in C* – concert pitch, and then transpose the parts for the players. When I think of the countless HOURS we all spent writing this out, before software was invented, I could cry – and no, it is done on the flute. Amazing. Of course, this has also led to far more gorgeous-looking pages of musical garbage.

As other have suggested, please spread the wealth around – give everyone a chance to shine, and some interesting harmonic parts to play, even if that interest is rhythmic and not melodic or harmonic. Good luck with this project.
