What is the proper way to hold a trombone?

I just received a really, really old and beaten up Holton Collegiate trombone, but think I want to learn to play it. Any advice on how to hold it?

Here’s a good explanation on a wiki page, but I’ll come back and find a website with pictures, as it’s a challenge to explain in just words alone.
Before that…do you have access to a basic method book? A beginner’s method book includes a description and diagram of holding the trombone correctly and it’s care.

Secondly, is the trombone in good condition to play? Is the slide dented? Any rust patches/holes? You say it’s old and beaten up.
If so, it needs to get a once-over by an instrument repairman before you can play it.

I wish I could find a website with pictures, but I could not. However, I’ll give you some links to beginner’s method books that will include everything–slide charts, etudes, care, proper position, embouchure, everything! The best part is–they’re fairly cheap.
