What notes can you get on a bugle?

I tried to teach myself how to play the bugle(I’m a strings player usually) . Mine is in the key of F, and so far, I can play a perfect fourth, from F to B-flat. So, what else can it do. I know it can only stay in its own key, so does that mean that I could potentially play F, G, A, B-flat, C, D, E, F? I asked my friend (who plays the trombone) said that it’s called “partials”, but I didn’t really understand his explanation, so if you could explain that too, that would be perfect.

Bugles, lacking any valves, can only play in the overtone series in one key. If you’re playing an F and Bb, then you have a Bb bugle, because a Bb does not fit in the F series.

The overtone series starts with a tonic, then the octave, a 5th, a 4th (next octave), major 3rd, minor 3rd, another minor 3rd (out of tune), and a major 2nd to the next octave. The series can go beyond that (M2, M2, M2, m2), but by then the range is so high that it won’t be a factor with a bugle. Notice that the intervals get smaller as you go higher.

So, on a Bb bugle, the notes are Bb Bb F Bb D F (Ab) Bb C D E F.., though you may or may not be able to play that lowest note.
